COVID-19 Top Vaccines

In our vaccine newsletter from last week, we reported that news channels in the UK are expecting the Oxford vaccine to receive regulatory approval and be rolled out in the UK by New Year

According to the Independent, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is set to authorize the vaccines on December 28/29 after final data is provided to the regulatory body on Monday.

Earlier this week, the US FDA granted the Moderna vaccine an Emergency Use Authorization for their mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine in individuals that are 18 years and over. 

The European Commission has also exercised its option to purchase an additional 80 million doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine. The European Commission’s confirmed order now stands at 160 million doses of the vaccine.

Cansino has recruited over 20,000 volunteers for their Phase 3 clinical trials abroad. This is just above halfway through their planned 40,000 participant trial. Participants are being enrolled in Pakistan, Russia, Mexico, and Chile.

Sinopharm is behind two of the Chinese coronavirus vaccines: the unnamed inactive virus vaccine from Wuhan and the BBIBP-CorV. Earlier last week, Peru halted the trials of Sinopharm’s COVID vaccine after a patient suffered neurological problems. This week, it was confirmed that the study of the Wuhan Unnamed Vaccine trials was halted and then resumed when it was determined that the neurological problems were not caused by the vaccine being studied.

The UK was the first country in the world to approve a COVID-19 vaccine — Pfizer and BioNTech’s BNT162b2. A total of 138,000 people in the UK received the first dose of the vaccine in the first week of the rollout. 

Earlier today, the vaccine was approved by European regulators for use in EU countries.

The Gamaleya Research Institute have announced earlier this week that their vaccine is 91.4% effective, after citing a new analysis of their Phase 3 clinical trial data.

Earlier this week, Novavax announce its agreement with the government of New Zealand for 10.7 million doses of the NVX-CoV2373. 

The vaccine is still in Phase 3 clinical trials that are being conducted in the UK.

Johnson and Johnson have announced this week that they have successfully enrolled ~45,000 participants for the late stage of their COVID-19 trials. As a reminder, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine differs from other competitors as it only requires a single shot of the vaccine.

Bharat Biotech released their Phase 1/2 trial results earlier this week. Results suggested that the vaccine did not cause any serious side effects, and also produced antibodies against COVID-19. The company expects results of the Phase 3 trials in early 2021.

Russia’s Bektop Vector Institute began Phase 3 clinical trials in November having recruited nearly 30,000 participants for the trial. According to the NY Times, 1,438 volunteers have received the vaccine as of December 15.
